Living in Tecumseh, Ontario: On the Shore of Lake St. Clair
Tecumseh sits on Lake St. Clair about 20 minutes east of downtown Windsor, with roughly 23,300 people and a shoreline that does most of the work in this market. It's the closest thing Essex County has to a town where you get the lake and the city in the same day. Two things drive value here, and one of them has a hundred-year-old golf course in the middle of it.

Two things drive value in Tecumseh: proximity to Lake St. Clair, and proximity to Beach Grove. The lake is the obvious one. The golf club is the one that surprises people from outside the county.
The Tecumseh you buy in today is really three places that got put together in 1999, when the old Town of Tecumseh amalgamated with the Village of St. Clair Beach and the Township of Sandwich South. It nearly doubled the population overnight. Then in 2003 Windsor annexed about 23 square kilometres south and east of the airport, and the boundaries settled into what they are now.
That history matters more than it sounds. St. Clair Beach along the water, the older town centre around Tecumseh Road and Lesperance, and the rural stretches out through Maidstone, Oldcastle, Fairplay, and Paquette Corners all live under one name and one search filter. They are not the same purchase.
The town is named for the Shawnee war chief who fought alongside the British and Canadians in the War of 1812. Settlement here dates back to the 1790s. Read the street and park names, Lesperance, Lacasse, Paquette, and you're reading the French-Canadian settlement history of this shoreline.
The 2021 census counted 23,300 people across about 95 square kilometres, and a good share of that land is still farmed. One of the real advantages of buying here is range. Tecumseh has 1950s cottages along the shoreline, established streets around the town centre, and subdivisions finished in the last couple of years, all inside one municipality. Not many towns this size give you that much to choose from.
Beach Grove Golf and Country Club was chartered in 1921 and opened in 1922, on a course designed by Stanley Thompson, the most celebrated golf architect Canada has produced. It's private, it sits right on the shore of Lake St. Clair, and it turned a hundred in 2021. The streets around it are among the most sought-after addresses in Essex County, and a listing that can say backing onto Beach Grove, or a short walk from the club, is not competing in the same market as one three concessions south.
That's the thing about Tecumseh that a portal listing will never tell you. Two houses with the same square footage and the same finishes, ten minutes apart, are not the same house here.

The waterfront and Lakewood Park
Lakewood is the centrepiece: 65 acres with a sandy beach and full access to Lake St. Clair, a paved walking trail, outdoor fitness equipment, a climbing boulder, a winding water channel and pond, an 18-hole disc golf course, a pavilion, and a gazebo. Lacasse Park and McAuliffe Park are the other two regional parks. Beyond those there are community parks at Buster Reaume, Weston, Optimist, Tecumseh Town Centre, and St. Mary's, plus the soccer fields.
Trails
About 40 kilometres of them run through the town, including the Chrysler Canada Greenway, the Lesperance Trail, Fairplay Woods, and McAuliffe Woods.
Golf
Beach Grove Golf and Country Club is the anchor, private and on the water. Lakewood Golf Club is the adjoining course, and it has its own history: it was the St. Clair Golf Club before Beach Grove took a separate charter in 1921 to avoid the confusion. Royal Estates is also in town, and there's disc golf at Lakewood Park.
The main roads, and what's on them
Tecumseh Road is County Road 2 and runs the length of the town. Lesperance Road runs north to the water. Manning Road, County Road 19, marks the eastern edge with a large shopping plaza at the Tecumseh Road corner. Riverside Drive follows the shoreline. Between them you have most of the retail, and Windsor's full range is 20 minutes west.
History and civic
The Chief Tecumseh statue stands at the town hall on Lesperance Road. The Tecumseh Area Historical Society runs a museum, and the Sandwich South and Area Historical Society has a cultural and resource centre.
Sport
The St. Clair Green Giants of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League play at Lacasse Park, which is a genuinely good summer evening for not much money.
Things that happen every year
The Tecumseh Corn and Music Festival in August is the big one, and it's been going long enough that people plan around it. Taste of Tecumseh. The farmers market monthly from June into October. Tecumseh Twilight, with classic cars, food trucks, and live music. The Lakewood Summer Sounds concert series. Moonlight Movie Nights. The F7 Festival. Christmas in Tecumseh in November with the Santa Claus parade.
Getting around
Tecumseh runs its own transit service, and the 401 is a short run south.
