The Town of Essex counts 21,216 people across 277 square kilometres, and most of that land is farmed. That is the honest summary, and it is what separates this market from the towns on the lake. The Town of Essex covers about 277 square kilometres, and the great majority of it is agricultural: field crop production, horse farms, and vineyards. What that gives a buyer is the thing that's hardest to find and impossible to add later, which is land.
Essex Centre is the largest of the town's four urban communities and sits in the geographic centre of Essex County. That location is worth more than it sounds. From here, Windsor, Leamington, Kingsville, Amherstburg, and the lake are all roughly the same short drive, and Highway 401 is minutes away. You are not choosing one part of the county over another. You are choosing the middle of it.
Essex Centre grew up around the Talbot Trail and reached town status in 1890. The current Town of Essex was formed on 1 April 1999, amalgamating the former towns of Essex and Harrow with the townships of Colchester North and Colchester South. The municipality now takes in four urban communities: Essex Centre, Harrow, Colchester, and McGregor. Harrow and Colchester have their own guide, since the lake changes what matters there.
One piece of geography that never stops being satisfying: Colchester South, at the southern end of this municipality, lies farther south than the northern border of California.

The country
This is the amenity, and it deserves to be listed as one. Field crops, horse farms, and vineyards across the hinterland, with concession roads that make the whole county reachable. Buyers looking at acreage here are usually looking at what it lets them do: horses, a shop, a hobby farm, or simply distance from the next house.
Essex Centre and Talbot Street
The main street is Talbot, and it runs the business district: grocery, Canadian Tire, the pharmacy, hardware, the banks, and the local restaurants. Billy's Taphouse, Brenko's House of Pizza, the Dairy Freez. Blimey's British Store carries UK sweets and gifts, which is the kind of shop a small town either has or doesn't. The Essex County Library branch and Town Hall are in the core.
The Essex Centre Sports Complex
Just off Talbot Street South, opened in January 2010. A twin-pad facility: the Libro Credit Union Rink is NHL-sized with bowl seating for 1,168, and the Shaheen Rink is a practice pad seating 222. A 210-metre indoor walking track wraps the main rink and is free to use, year-round, which matters more in February than it sounds in July. Ten dressing rooms, meeting rooms, a canteen, a skate shop, and Wi-Fi throughout. This is where the Essex 73's play, the most successful Junior C club in Ontario. At the old Memorial Arena they took sixteen Great Lakes League championships and six Ontario Junior C titles, and in the final season there, 2008-09, they went 31 and 0 at home and won the province.
The Essex Recreation Complex
At 242 Talbot Street North, with the pool, a gymnasium, and community space.
Parks
Sadler's Park is the standout: 10.4 acres of nature park with a one-kilometre walking path, two ponds, a dock, picnic tables, and a pavilion. That path is also the first kilometre of the future Essex to Amherstburg Greenway. Bridlewood Optimist Park has 3.2 acres and a hill that the whole town sleds. Hunter Park has ball and soccer. There's a splash pad and a pirate ship playground with public washrooms.
The Railway Station
A garden path runs from Talbot Street to the historic Essex Railway Station, lined with markers naming the individuals and families who built the town. The station is a landmark and a visitor hub.
Museums and heritage
The Essex County Steam and Gas Engine Museum is in McGregor, with late nineteenth and early twentieth century engines and antique tractors, open seasonally. The Carnegie library building houses local history resources and the historical research society.
Wine country
The Lake Erie North Shore appellation surrounds the municipality, and there are wineries in and around it including Viewpointe, Sprucewood Shores, Oxley, and Black Bear, with Colio in Harrow. Several run tastings, live music, and events. There's a coffee roastery in town as well.
Trails
The Chrysler Canada Greenway runs roughly 40 kilometres through the county on the old rail corridor, including through Essex, and it's one of the better outdoor amenities in the region.
Healthcare
There's no hospital in Essex. Emergency and inpatient care is in Windsor. Family practices, clinics, dentists, optometrists, and allied health cover the everyday locally.
McGregor
The fourth of the town's urban communities, north of Essex Centre and closer to the Windsor side.
Getting around
Highway 401 is minutes from Essex Centre, and the county road network puts Windsor, the lake towns, and the border all within a comfortable drive.
Things that happen every year
Fun Fest at the Essex fairgrounds is the town's summer festival, with rides, live entertainment, and food. The wineries run their own calendar of concerts, tastings, and harvest events through the season.
